Ministers approve tenant body proposals
Those who are choose to rent a house or flat in London could be given more influence over government policy, after plans for a new body were approved.
Ministers have accepted proposals for the National Tenant Voice (NTV) - an independent organisation.
In addition to giving tenants a chance to express their views on policy, it will commission research in order to enhance understanding of the experiences of those who rent accommodation.
"Never before have social tenants had a national body with the capacity to represent them at the highest level and I would encourage tenants across the country to get involved in its work," said communities minister Iain Wright.
A tenant council is also to be set up, with 50 representatvies from across the country advising the NTV.
The ideal occupant of rented accommodation is a female professional between the ages of 36 and 45, who is living in London and working in the medical sector, according to a recent poll of UK landlords by Halifax.
