Minister praises London council tax move
Local authorities' moves to keep council tax low for Londoners have been welcomed.
Responding to the news that the average increase will be just 1.2 per cent, with two boroughs actually cutting the charge, local government minister John Healey noted that it will help residents cope with the recession.
Explaining that that councils should "do all they can to help people through these tough economic times", he added: "People are relying on their public services and keeping council tax down should not mean cutting services."
According to Mr Healey, the boroughs of Hackney, Newham and Greenwich are freezing their charge but he discovered on visiting them last month that services are still being improved.
He also stated that London boroughs will receive an additional £131 million in funding next year, allowing them to meet local needs.
Yesterday London Councils revealed that the average council tax increase in the capital will be half the national figure, with Hammersmith & Fulham implementing a three per cent cut.
