Mayor calls for Olympics to be used to cut youth crime
London mayor Boris Johnson has suggested that the Olympics could be used as a vehicle to inspire youngsters and stop teenagers drifting into a life of crime.
Speaking at a meeting in Wembley on the subject of youth gang and knife crime, Mr Johnson said that the bringing of the games to London could even get some of those who might otherwise go off the rails to become athletes and compete for Britain.
Alternatively, some could become skilled workers involved in the construction of Olympic venues.
He said: "We have a chance of helping some of those kids who might otherwise go wrong".
Such a project could help lower crime and boost the economy across the metropolis.
Mr Johnson was speaking on the day when the British Olympic and Paralympic teams staged a medal-laden parade through the streets of the capital.
Britain's Olympic team won 47 medals in Beijing, including 19 golds, while the Paralympians won 102 medals including 42 golds.
