Major East London regeneration scheme unveiled
The government has unveiled plans for a substantial regeneration scheme in the east end of London.
Under the new plans, a major investment package will be funnelled into housing and infrastructure in some of the capital's most underprivileged areas.
Housing and Planning Minister Caroline Flint unveiled the£237 million programme this week, insisting that the project would "reinvigorate" eight areas in the London Thames Gateway.
London Thames Gateway Development Corporation chairman Lorraine Baldry commented: "Regeneration of the Lower Lea Valley and London Riverside means more than just building houses.
"Our plan for the next three years is to drive forward schemes which will create a sense of place and belonging for local people and an environment that attracts new residents and businesses to settle."
Housing Minister Flint added: "Throughout the London Thames Gateway a lot has been achieved but now we need to see a gear change."
The scheme encompasses the creation of some 8,200 new homes and will lead to the creation of an estimated 7,900 jobs.
