London Olympics 'to set benchmark for sustainability'
The 2012 Olympic Games in London is set to be one of the most sustainable sporting events ever held, it has been stated.
According to the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games, efforts to ensure the environmental impact of the Games is minimised include plans to tackle climate change, waste and healthy living.
A spokesman for the body explained that a "benchmark for sustainability" is being set for future events, adding that all partners have been co-operative in the planning.
"In terms of having sustainable events but also in terms of preparation and legacy we are setting the bar quite high," he said.
The mayor of London, Boris Johnson, has previously announced that a sustainable development strategy would be adopted for the Games, which will benefit those living in boroughs such as Hackney and Newham.
Permanent buildings are set to only be on reclaimed 'brownfield' sites, while construction projects will aim to minimise pollution.
