Housing regulator to strengthen tenants' hand
Tenants will be given a louder voice over the practices of their landlords thanks to a new recruitment policy at the Tenant Services Authority.
In line with the wishes of housing minister Caroline Flint, the social housing regulator is ensuring that two of the four vacant positions on its board are filled by social housing tenants.
The regulator will then be tasked with identifying which landlords provide the highest level of service to tenants, with plans afoot to cut red tape for those buy-to-let investors who fulfil their duties well.
Among people who have property to rent in London but fail to abide by their obligations as landlords, however, the body is set to take a decidedly more hard-line approach.
"The new regulator will have wide ranging powers to affect change across the social housing sector and to ensure that the interests of tenants are protected," Ms Flint commented.
"I want tenants to join the board of the new regulator to share their experience of social housing, to help reward the many excellent registered social landlords and to take suitable action against those who are not providing an acceptable level of service."
