GMB praises school meals decision
The decision to provide schoolchildren in the London borough of Islington with free lunches has been praised by the GMB union.
Pupils under the age of 11 in the area will be provided with free school dinners under plans outlined by councillors for the 2009 budget.
Each family that takes advantage of the offer could save £600, the union stated.
"Free school meals for the under-11s will help hard-pressed families with their food bills in these difficult economic times," councillor and GMB branch secretary for Islington Council Gary Doolan said.
He added that the move is "bang on target" to help boost the residents of the borough.
Mr Doolan also suggested that obesity levels among youngsters may also be tackled by other measures from the council, such as free access to leisure facilities for children.
The Greater London Authority and the London Development Agency recently revealed that 110 meals are served in hospitals and schools in the city every year.
