Funding to restore London places of worship
Nearly £1.3 million is being provided to restore seven listed places of worship in London, it has been announced.
English Heritage and the Heritage Lottery Fund are awarding grants to carry out repairs, with common problems including leaking or unsafe roofs and drains.
Among those benefiting is Islington's Union Chapel, which provides around 150 meals to homeless people every week.
Minister Fionnaigh Reid noted that the funding is particularly welcome as it had been facing closure, adding: "We are thrilled to receive this grant to repair our tower, a well-loved landmark in Islington that is teetering on the edge of collapse."
The money constitutes part of over £15.5 million being given to grade I and II listed buildings across England.
Last week, English Heritage announced that a number of historic sites in Tower Hamlets would be formally recognised by being listed at grade II, in a bid to draw more attention from residents and tourists alike.
