Elephant & Castle regeneration scrutinised
Southwark Council has heard objections put forward by the Elephant & Castle Shopping Centre Traders' Association (ECSCA) over regeneration of the borough.
The association called for clarity over the timetable for demolition of the road's main shopping centre, insisting that any further uncertainty could have a detrimental effect on residents and local businesses.
ECSCA spokesperson Valerie Stevens said it was crucial that local businesses be invited into the fold and be kept aware of what form the regenerated shopping centre will take.
Doing so would ensure that "the future of Elephant & Castle tenants is going to be a bright one and not a bleak one" she asserted.
Acknowledging Ms Stevens' concerns, councillor Richard Thomas, executive member for regeneration, affirmed: "It's of critical importance to us that the new Elephant & Castle caters for small and independent traders."
He said that the measures taken by local council officials to protect the interests of local businesses far exceeded anything done by local authorities working on comparable regeneration schemes in the capital.
Southwark Council this week appointed Jon Abbott as the new head of the Elephant & Castle regeneration project.
