Deposit scheme 'having a positive effect' for tenants
Those renting a house or flat in London are benefiting from improved relationships with landlords, it has been suggested.
According to Lanlordzone.co.uk, the tenancy deposit protection scheme is having a "positive effect" because it introduces a third party.
Under the scheme, a deposit is held by an agency - rather than the landlord - preventing the unfair withholding of money.
And editor of the site Tom Entwistle noted that this can help ensure people are not exploited, stating: "The vulnerable people [who] are not in a position to apply pressure to the landlord may be helped by the scheme."
He explained that although disputes were rare under the old system, occasionally landlords would unfairly withhold deposits, or tenants would object to paying for damage.
Mydeposits.co.uk - a government approved deposit protection scheme - has found that 91 per cent of disputes in the third quarter of 2008 led to tenants receiving all or part of their deposit back.
