Croydon council targets underage sales
Residents of the London borough of Croydon could find that it becomes a better place to live as a result of a new initiative.
The council has announced that it is teaming up with supermarket chain Tesco to promote the Think and Challenge 21 scheme, in order to reduce the possibility of youngsters illegally buying restricted items.
Free training is being offered to small businesses in the borough, with 12 firms having already sent staff to the Thornton Heath branch of Tesco.
Under the scheme, anyone who looks under 21 is asked to prove that they are over the age of 18 when buying goods such as alcohol, cigarettes and knives.
"Whilst trading standards officers will continue to check that shops are abiding by the law
we hope that retailers that apply the training can avoid making an illegal sale," said executive director of community services at Croydon Council Tom Jeffrey.
Earlier this month a new youth centre was opened at the Grange Park pavilion in Croydon, offering a range of activities and services for teenagers.
