British Waterways signs up to London food growing scheme
A project to find 2,012 spaces for growing food in London by 2012 has received a major boost, Mayor Boris Johnson has announced.
British Waterways has signed up to the Capital Growth scheme, identifying land in the borough of Hackney that could be used.
The initiative aims to employ areas alongside canals and even retired workboats for planting fruit and vegetables and land by the Hertford Union Canal in Hackney Wick is to be cultivated.
Mr Johnson explained that he is "thrilled" by the British Waterways commitment, adding that the project "will not only provide local communities with top notch healthy grub, but also help make our waterways even more vibrant, exciting and colourful places to enjoy".
Last month Hackney was identified by the GMB Union as one of the least affordable places to buy property in the UK, which could mean that those hoping to live there will prefer to rent a house or flat instead.
