Arla welcomes the government's commitment to rental properties
The Association of Residential Letting Agents (ARLA) has said that it broadly welcomes the proposals for the sector that the government set out earlier this week.
A Select Committee report acknowledged the important role that rented housing played in London and the rest of the country and provided some suggestions for how the market could be improved.
It called for the accreditation of Letting Agents and said that buy-to-let landlords had helped improve the stability of rents in the capital and beyond.
The report noted: "It is they who have been largely responsible for growth in the private rented sector, for the stable rent levels and for renting becoming socially acceptable once again."
While ARLA's head of operations, Ian Potter, welcomed the gist of the report, he added that the committee had overlooked addressing problems with licensing of houses in multiple occupation.
He also stressed that it was vital the government continued to look at ways the rented sector in London and the rest of the country could be supported.
"We have to hope that the credit crunch will not damage [buy-to-let investment]. The private rented sector needs more investment," Mr Potter concluded.
