Traffic-free shopping day announced
London mayor Boris Johnson has announced that there will be a traffic-free day for Christmas shopping.
The mayor joined with the New West End company and retailers to announce today that Saturday December 6th will be declared Shop West End VIP (Very Important Pedestrians) Day.
On that day Oxford Street and Regent Street will be closed to cars, allowing those living in Westminster and other parts of London to enjoy their Christmas shopping without worrying about any traffic holding up their progress.
The announcement was marked by 30 Santas on scooters.
Boris Johnson said of the news: "The traffic-free shopping day has been a stunning success in the past and I look forward to hearing the West End was packed to the rafters once again this year."
West London shoppers were given a boost last week with the opening of the new Westfield shopping centre in Hammersmith & Fulham.
The centre contains 265 different stores.
