TfL launches motorcycle safety campaign
A new campaign aimed at improving safety for motorcyclists has been launched by Transport for London (TFL).
Citing research showing that an optical effect can mislead drivers into thinking they have longer time than they do when such vehicles are approaching, the body is urging motorists to take particular care.
Tests conducted by psychologists in several independent studies revealed that drivers estimate motorcycles to take more time to reach them than larger vehicles, despite travelling at identical speeds.
Television adverts have been created to highlight the issue, with TFL stating that it is particularly relevant as Londoners opt to use the vehicles again following a break over the winter.
Noting that bicycles and motorcycles play an important part in reducing congestion, Chris Lines of TFL remarked: "Safer roads and more considerate driving will make it an easier choice for any Londoner wishing to make the switch to two wheels."
The body recently hosted a summit, with experts from Paris, Rome and Barcelona attending to discuss ways of improving road safety for motorcyclists.
