Sutton residents 'taking to two wheels'
Cyclists in the London borough of Sutton have been benefiting as a result of a £5 million initiative, Transport for London has announced.
The Smarter Travel Sutton scheme is entering its third and final year and a progress report has revealed an increase of 50 per cent in the number of people using bicycles.
In addition, the introduction of 200 secure parking spaces was found to have contributed to a 17 per cent drop in cycle theft in the borough.
The programme is designed to encourage people to use more sustainable modes of travel and London mayor Boris Johnson - himself an avid cyclist - welcomed the report.
He said: "The fact that this initiative has led so many people in Sutton to take to two wheels is great news for the environment and for the wellbeing of people in the borough."
Last month the Metropolitan Police held an awareness day in the capital, in a bid to highlight the danger posed to cyclists by lorries.
