Somers Town debates medical centre plans
With Christmas on its way the Somers Town neighbourhood in the borough of Camden is set to be gifted with a state of the art medical research centre – but not all residents are welcoming the project with open arms.
Prime Minister Gordon Brown has given the go-ahead for land behind the British Library on Euston Road to be developed into a £500 million medical research centre, a move which some residents feel ignores the need for more affordable housing in the area.
Somers Town is currently benefiting from the boom in visitors to the neighbouring Kings Cross area, thanks to the construction of the St Pancras Eurostar terminal and the new premium it has placed on nearby housing, with many claiming that a new medical research centre could have similar effects.
Proponents have claimed that in order for the Somers Town and Kings Cross areas to be fully regenerated, they need to welcome new public developments that bring with them an interest in the area, jobs, and new prospects.
Meanwhile, others have claimed that the crowded borough of Camden needs affordable housing and community facilities more than anything – pointing to promises from Gordon Brown to devote much new land to new house-building programmes.
Buying and renting in the Somers Town and Kings Cross areas can often bring affordable prices and great access to the rest of London and even Europe, thanks to the expanding Kings Cross St Pancras rail hub.
