Regulation planned to improve London roads
Londoners could be set to see an improvement in traffic flow and the state of roads as a result of new proposals.
Transport for London has teamed up with 18 boroughs to plan a permit scheme, designed to ensure that firms intending to dig up roads are regulated.
It is hoped that the initiative will result in better journeys for those using the roads, as one million holes are estimated to be dug in the capital each year.
Mayor Boris Johnson explained that utility companies are currently able to carry out works "with reckless abandon" and that Londoners are "fed up" with the resulting queues.
"I made a pledge that I would put an end to this archaic system and this process will bring us a step closer," he said.
Last week, the government awarded 30 London boroughs £50,000 each in order to help manage assets such as roads and bridges.
