Regeneration 'key' to London 2012 success
The chairman of the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) has said that regeneration must form the cornerstone of investment programmes for London 2012.
Speaking at a Foundation for Science and Technology debate on what legacy the Games will leave after their completion, John Armitt insisted that local communities should be the main beneficiaries.
The ODA chairman praised the progress that has already been made in clearing and sanitising a previously neglected and contaminated part of East London, but he said much more remains to be done.
Work has already begun on building over 30 new permanent bridges and 20km of roads, Mr Armitt noted, with improved transport links also ensuring the regeneration will have a lasting impact on the area.
Alluding to positive indications that East London property could steadily become more attractive, he noted: "The investment in the regeneration of this area is not coming just from the public sector.
"London 2012 is also acting as a catalyst for significant private sector investment and last week Westfield announced the green light on the £1.5 billion Stratford City retail-led development adjacent to the Olympic Park."
