Police aim to improve safety for cyclists
An awareness day is being held in the City of London next week, with the aim of educating residents and commuters about the need for road safety.
The Metropolitan Police is focusing on cyclists and encouraging awareness of the risk of collision with lorries.
Officers are teaming up with Transport for London and the London Cycling Campaign, with four popular routes for cyclists to be targeted on Tuesday January 20th.
Cyclists who attend an event at St Paul's churchyard at midday - when police will be offering advice - will see penalty tickets issued this week cancelled.
Special mirrors will also be offered to lorry drivers, to give them greater visibility and help avoid collisions with bicycles.
"I would urge cyclists to attend one of the sites during this operation and learn why these collisions occur and how they can be avoided - it could save your life," said Inspector Graham Norwood of the force's traffic unit.
The City of London is one of the capital's boroughs due to benefit from a cycle hire scheme, which could make it easier for those renting a house or flat to get around.
