New speed cameras to be installed in London boroughs
Road safety in London may be improved further as new speed cameras are set to be introduced.
The Association of Chief Police Officers has backed the scheme, which sees cameras that are linked wirelessly track vehicles.
They detect how fast a motorist is going at every entry and exit point to a residential area, recording number plates and calculating average speeds.
Several of the capital's boroughs are thought to be interested in the technology, which has been trialled in Camden.
Chris Lines, head of road safety at Transport for London (TFL), told the Times: "TFL will be working with London boroughs piloting the installation of some 20mph zones where part of the enforcement will be using the new cameras."
They are set to be deployed as an alternative to measures such as chicanes and speed bumps.
A new THINK! campaign was recently launched by the government, with television adverts designed to make drivers aware of the potential consequences of speeding.
