New leisure centre for Dagenham
Residents of the London borough of Barking & Dagenham are to benefit from a new leisure centre and swimming pool, it has been confirmed.
The £19 million regeneration project will involve tearing down the Seabrook Community Hall and Dagenham Swimming Pool before building a state-of-the-art community facility in its place.
Demolition work will begin at the end of the year while construction of the new building is expected to get underway next spring. If all work is completed on schedule, the centre will open its doors in 2011.
In addition to a 25 metre swimming pool, local residents will be able to enjoy a range of facilities spanning activities as diverse as a wall-climbing and martial arts
Councillor Sid Kallar, Barking and Dagenham's executive member for regeneration, said that the new leisure centre would benefit people of all ages and will play an important role in regenerating the borough.
"It's absolutely necessary to regenerate this area," the Barking & Dagenham Recorder quoted him as saying. "All the things people need, the council is giving them. It's one of these things that will make life a little bit happier."
