New houses planned for Walthamstow Stadium site
A family-friendly housing estate could be part of new redevelopment plans for a historic site in Walthamstow.
In a new report commissioned by Waltham Forest borough council, guidelines suggest that the former Walthamstow Stadium - which closed last year - could be converted into affordable housing.
The suggestions, which may include property to rent in Walthamstow, feature a regeneration plan that could see the construction of family-sized homes and private gardens in the London region.
Former dog kennels at the stadium could be converted into parking spaces for bikes and vehicles, while the historic architecture of the greyhound racing site - which was originally constructed in 1933 - could be preserved as a public park and arts space.
Before its closure last year, Walthamstow Stadium was described as "the most charismatic greyhound track in Britain" by Observer writer Laura Thompson.
The last race was run at the stadium on August 16th 2008.
