New campaign 'fights for rights of people in flats to rent'
People seeking flats to rent in London may be interested to learn that one industry organisation is lending its support to a new campaign to stamp out rogue landlords.
The British Property Federation (BPF) is backing the Shelter-led initiative in order to make sure tenants are aware of their rights and able to enforce them.
According to the BPF, this scheme is necessary as the sector has experienced massive growth over the last decade, with 1.1 million more households entering the market since 2000.
Director of policy for the organisation Ian Fletcher said the government needs to make people recognise what landlords can and cannot do.
"Many live in ignorance of their basic housing rights, you have to wonder if we have got our priorities correct," he stated.
Mark Garner, director and founder of LettingZone, recently advised tenants to do research before they commit to a property, including checking the local area.
