New Covent Garden revamp approved
London's largest fresh produce market is set for a major revamp, it has been stated.
New Covent Garden, which supplies fresh food and flowers, has been given permission to undergo modernisation so that the 57-acre site can continue to meet the needs of Londoners, the government has announced.
Environment, Food and Rural affairs secretary Hilary Benn said the Covent Garden Market Authority, which runs the market, has been hard at work seeking a commercial partner to develop the site further, including the possible establishment of a 540,000 sq ft trading area.
The sale of surplus land is intended to help carry out the modernisation on the market, which is currently uneconomic.
Although only based at Vauxhall since 1974, the market has existed for over 800 years, the New Covent Garden Market website states.
The revamp could be of benefit to people renting in various parts of London, not least those residing locally in the borough of Wandsworth.
