NHF criticises Ofgem in energy bill debate
The National Housing Federation (NHF) has suggested that many people in the UK who use pre-payment meters for their utilities have paid too much.
So residents of property to rent in Hounslow or flats to rent in Haringey may be among the many consumers who could claim back some cash.
According to the NHF, which used figures from industry regulator Ofgem, those who have these meters could have spent nearly £0.5 billion more than they needed to since 2006.
Federation chief executive David Orr commented: "It is an absolute scandal that Ofgem allowed energy firms to overcharge customers to the tune of £460 million and potentially breach European Union rules for so many years."
He also claimed that the regulator "has been asleep on the job" and should start protecting ordinary people in the UK.
The government recently announced that all properties in the UK will have Smart Meters by 2020, which it is hoped will improve the utility bill payment method in the country and ensure people have a clearer idea about what their charges will be.
