'Minority of bad landlords' will be tackled
A new register of landlords in the UK may be able to root out any bad practices occurring within the sector, it has been suggested.
Speaking at the National Landlords Association conference last week, Ian Austin, minister with responsibility for the private-rented sector, took a number of questions from attendees keen to find out more about what the proposed register would entail.
"I'm not going to duck the issue. It's in your interests as much as mine that those who bring down your sector are dealt with. But I can't flick a switch in Whitehall and expect the whole system to change overnight," he stated.
Mr Austin added that it was important to get the associated legislation right, as oppose to rushing into the register.
Those looking for flats to rent in Wandsworth or another part of London may be in favour of such a register in order to locate a reputable landlord.
Meanwhile, research by Halifax recently revealed that around 300,000 private properties in England have now been empty for over six months.
