Minister backs Newham plans
Plans to help residents of the London borough of Newham through the economic downturn have been welcomed.
Local government minister John Healey visited the borough's employment service - Workplace - and expressed his support for a range of measures due to be implemented.
These include freezing council tax levels, as well as providing enhanced access to debt counselling and money advice.
"It is important that during the downturn councils keep council tax low and improve the services people rely on. Newham is helping set the standard in this regard," said Mr Healey.
Mayor of Newham Sir Robin Wales explained that investment is also being made to help people fell safer in the borough, as well as keep streets clean.
Last month the borough received the Ageing Well award at the e-inclusion conference, held in Vienna, in recognition of its telehealthcare service, which was found to be benefiting older people in particular.
