Merton best for dealing with autism, says NAS
The London borough of Merton has been rated top among all local authorities in England for dealing with adults who have autism.
A study by the National Autistic Society (NAS) has revealed that Merton is the only place in which the local authority knows how many autistic adults are living in the area.
It also has a named individual responsible for dealing with autism, government guidance that was found to be followed in just over a third of authorities.
Chief executive of the NAS Mark lever remarked: "We strongly welcome the good practice of those local authorities who are working hard to transform the lives of adults with autism and their families."
However, he added that the results show much still needs to be done.
Last month Merton was recognised for making roads safer for residents of the borough, after child casualties were found to have dropped from 15 in 2006 to one last year.
