Mayor responds to congestion consultation
London mayor Boris Johnson has announced that the western extension of the congestion charging zone will be scrapped.
A review of the extension was one of Mr Johnson's election pledges and following a public consultation it has been established that 67 per cent of residents and 86 per cent of businesses based in the extension area want it scrapped.
The mayor responded that he had pledged to "respect their [Londoners'] opinions" on the subject, concluding: "As a mayor that keeps his promises I am instructing Transport for London to begin work on the process of a formal consultation on the removal of the western extension."
Such measures could make car use cheaper for those renting a flat or house in areas inside the western extension like parts of Kensington & Chelsea.
Mr Johnson said Transport for London is working on other projects to try to reduce congestion.
Last week transport secretary Geoff Hoon said improvements to rail freight lines would help ease congestion by getting more lorries off the capital's roads.
