London schools set up 'walking buses'
More than 90 London schools have signed up to an initiative to encourage children to walk more, the government has announced.
The Department for Transport is providing funding for the scheme, which sees 'walking buses' set up for pupils.
Staff or volunteers lead convoys of children to and from school on foot, following a set route, in a bid to reduce the number of cars on the road.
Each institution that has saved an average of five return trips per day is now being rewarded with £1,000 to help continue the effort, with money typically being spent on high-visibility clothing and promotion of the scheme.
Transport minister Paul Clark said he is "delighted" by the uptake, adding: "Not only will this help tackle the issues of childhood obesity and carbon emissions, it is also an excellent way for young children to learn more about road safety."
Earlier this week, education watchdog Ofsted praised North Beckton Primary School in the borough of Newham for its "outstanding provision".
