London knife crime scheme 'shows success'
The government's campaign to reduce knife crime is proving to be successful, it has been revealed.
Minister for London Tony McNulty noted a fall in offences since the initiative began six months ago, with those against young people in particular seeing a drop.
"The reduction in the number of people found carrying knives is a positive step and a credit to the hard work being done by government, the police and communities," he said, although he added that work would continue to build on the improvements.
Mr McNulty's comments came following Home Office findings that the Tackling Knives Action Programme has seen injuries drop by 27 per cent in the areas in which it has been introduced.
Londoners are now set to benefit from part of a £4.5 million fund, which is being provided to help local community groups run activities for young people in order to further discourage the use of knives.
