London councils praised for services
A dozen London councils have been recognised for the quality of service provided to residents.
Those living in the boroughs honoured by the 2009 Beacon awards were found to have been benefiting from innovative measures focusing on issues that are particularly relevant at present.
Among them was Croydon - which was praised for enhancing economic prosperity through partnerships - and Enfield, which was shown to have taken steps in supporting independent living for disabled adults.
"These authorities are the top performers in their field, setting the standard for innovation, service excellence and improvement," said communities minister Sadiq Khan, adding: "The winners are ideally placed to share their knowledge and skills."
A total of 56 councils across England were recognised and £3 million of government funding is being provided to help them expand their work.
Last week a number of London boroughs revealed that council tax would be frozen in the coming year, with Hammersmith & Fulham implementing a three per cent cut.
