London charities to receive boost
Support for volunteers, charities and social organisations in London has been announced by the government.
The capital is set to benefit from a share of a £42.5 million package put together by minister for the cabinet office Liam Byrne.
And minister for London Tony McNulty stated that the move will allow such bodies to continue to meet the needs of residents during the recession, as well as enabling them to survive and then thrive when a recovery takes place.
"The work of London's 50,000 third sector organisations is particularly important at this time and they are experiencing an increased demand for their services from people affected by the downturn," he remarked.
Investment in volunteer brokerage schemes is included in the plans, allowing people who are out of work to learn new skills through volunteering.
Mayor of London Boris Johnson recently praised people who had given up their time to help others over the Christmas period, noting that thousands of Londoners had done so.
