Landlords 'want to hold on to cheques'
Cheques are set to be phased out as a payment method, it has been announced.
The Payments Council Board said it hoped the closure of central cheque clearing will have been reached by October 31st 2018.
However, organisations including the Federation of Master Builders and the Residential Landlords Association (RLA) have expressed concern prior to and since this decision was announced.
Commenting on the news, Alan Ward, RLA chairman, said the announcement is not likely to be welcomed by landlords.
"Landlords need cheques - they provide a secure and generally non-negotiable form of payment for quite large sums of money," he explained.
The alternative was to take cash, he said, but this puts the security of both the landlord and the tenant at risk when they are carrying a large sum on their person.
Such comments may be of concern to Britons currently looking for flats to rent in Wandsworth or another part of London.
Mr Ward concluded it was not possible to know what technological alternatives will have been developed by 2015 when the final decision will be made.
