Landlord agencies condemn name and shame practice
Two of Britain's largest rental industry bodies have joined forces to condemn the practice of naming and shaming those in rent arrears, something that may be good news for those renting in London.
Following a recent case where an agent put up signs on properties where problems had occurred highlighting the non-payment of rent, the National Landlords Association (NLA) and the Association of Residential Letting Agents (ARLA) have joined forces to reject such responses.
ARLA head of operations Ian Potter said: "This is almost certainly an illegal activity, contravening data protection and planning laws", while NLA chairman David Salusbury called this approach a "fundamentally flawed" idea.
The agent in question was Sutton Estates, which operates in Liverpool, but the comments by the two main agents bodies will mean that those who choose to rent a house or flat in London should now be less at risk of anything similar happening as ARLA and the NLA members will be discouraged from following suit.
