Lambeth children undertake 'Robo-Challenge'
Children across the London borough of Lambeth have been taking part in a competition to create their own robot.
Lambeth Council announced that the IBM Robo-Challenge was undertaken at eight different primary schools, with pupils being encouraged to programme their machines to perform simple tasks.
Youngsters living in flats to rent in Clapham who attend the schools involved had the chance to learn about Lego robots from IBM volunteers before entering.
And Paul McGlone, cabinet member for children and young people, said: "The Robo-Challenge gave them the chance to demonstrate their teamwork and creativity, learn new skills and contribute to their understanding of working with ICT and other technologies."
The contest was run through a partnership between Lambeth Council, Clapham Youth Centre and Lambeth City Learning Centre, with five categories - including one for robots made out of rubbish.
Last week, the Local Government Chronicle handed Lambeth First - a scheme aimed at improving the quality of life for residents - first prize in its Local Strategic Partnership awards.
