Islington gets green boost
People looking for property to rent in Islington may be pleased to hear that the government is awarding it with at least £200,000 to go towards making the Archway area greener and more energy efficient.
Speaking to the London Congress, Mayor Boris Johnson said that Islington, along with Barking and Dagenham, Haringey, Lambeth, Lewisham, Merton, Richmond upon Thames, Southwark, Sutton and Westminster, is set to create Low Carbon Zones within their boroughs.
As a result of the funding, it is hoped that residents living in the ten areas will soon be able to enjoy reduced energy bills.
And the scheme is also aiming to reduce carbon emissions by 20.12 per cent by 2012.
The zones will cover over 13,000 residential properties, around 1,000 shops and businesses, 20 schools as well as a hospital, places of worship and community centres.
Commenting on the funding reward in Lambeth, Sally Prentice, cabinet member for environment on Lambeth Council, said everybody had to raise their game if they wanted to avoid climate change.
