How cold snap will hit Britons' wallets
The new year got off to a cold start, with snow on the ground for days in many parts of the UK, including London.
And although it has now melted away, Britons may still be left shivering once they open their energy bills covering this period.
Indeed, Moneysupermarket.com has urged people to be prepared for their annual bills to be some ten per cent higher than average, as a result of the freezing cold snap.
This may be particularly true as many UK households consume 40 per cent of their annual energy use during the winter months.
The group urged bill-payers to consider switching suppliers or look for a new tariff, while some simple home improvements could also see them saving money.
Scott Byrom, utilities manager at moneysupermarket.com, said: "Making your home as energy efficient as possible will also go a long way to cutting the cost of your bills this year."
Britons may find paying for flats to rent in Wandsworth or elsewhere in London leaves them with more money left over than if they were paying for a mortgage.
Furthermore, rental tenants can qualify for the boiler scrappage scheme, which could see them saving more next year on their heating bills.
