Historic Hackney park gets funding boost
A cherished haven of nature and tranquillity in North-East London is to receive a massive funding boost, as the London borough of Hackney seeks to preserve one of its hidden gems.
Clissold Park and House are to be granted a £7 million upgrade, with LDA Design and Jacobs UK commissioned to deliver a project that will keep the N16 postcode a popular one for property rental.
Many areas of Hackney have become more popular in recent years, as previously residential neighbourhoods have gained the vitality of shops and transport links – but the Clissold project offers a different side to Hackney.
Boosted by a £4.5 million Big Lottery Fund grant to the borough, the Grade II-listed Clissold House will come in for due renovation work, while de-silting and repairs to lakes, a river extension and new sports and play areas will be carried out on the surrounding parkland.
The 54 acre site was made into a public park in the 1880s and ever since its wide range of tree species, open spaces and its pond - previously a boating lake – have provided a green haven for Hackney residents.
Olympic developments at nearby Stratford and renovation work on the East London Line have seen Hackney tipped to become one of the most resilient London property markets in 2008.
