Heathrow expansion to be debated
A public debate over the issue of Heathrow Airport's third runway will be staged in Hayes tonight, it has been announced.
London mayor Boris Johnson has arranged the event, which will take place at the Beck Theatre and is to feature speakers on both sides of the debate.
Those arguing against the runway include Mr Johnson himself, former Ecologist magazine editor and Conservative party candidate Zac Goldsmith and leader of Hillingdon Council Ray Puddifoot.
Labour peer Lord Soley and the chief executive of West London Business Frank Wingate will put the case in favour of expansion.
All 600 tickets for members of the public to attend the event have been taken up.
Last week transport minister Geoff Hoon argued that the new runway would benefit those living in the capital.
He remarked: "This third runway will help secure jobs now and in the future and ensure that Britain remains a place where the world can come to do business."
