Formal recognition for historic Tower Hamlets sites
A number of buildings in Tower Hamlets have been formally recognised by being listed at grade II by English Heritage.
The sites in the East London borough are located along the route from the centre of the capital to the Olympic Park and the body noted that they can often be overlooked.
Among the historic buildings is New People's Palace, which was opened by George VI and Queen Elizabeth to alleviate poverty and boredom.
Heritage protection advisor at English Heritage Hannah Parham noted that Londoners and tourists alike can be unaware of the sites, but added that the new listings will help draw attention to them.
"We are delighted that the special architectural and historic interest of the area has been formally recognised in time for visitors to the 2012 Olympics to explore East London's unique heritage," she remarked.
HSS Hire recently announced that it was teaming up with Tower Hamlets charity City Gateway to offer training courses to young people in the borough.
