East London Transit construction begins
Residents of the London borough of Barking & Dagenham are set to benefit as construction of the East London Transit gets underway.
Transport for London announced that work was to begin on the first section of the new bus service is Barking town centre.
It is due to run from Ilford to Dagenham Dock, thanks to £18.5 million worth of funding to extend the planned scheme.
Minister for the Thames Gateway Margaret Beckett noted that the East London Transit will help make services as well as jobs more accessible for those living in the area.
"This scheme will help to open up Barking Riverside, providing the easier and quicker connections that can cut out so much of the frustration and delay that businesses suffer," she said.
Ms Beckett recently revealed that up to £35 million is to be invested in creating green spaces in the Thames Gateway area, as the government prioritises improving the standard of living.
