Demand for housing 'increases in London'
The number of households in London on a waiting list to move into social housing increased last year, new research has revealed.
According to figures from the National Housing Federation, 880,000 people residing in the capital found themselves waiting for accommodation in the 12 months leading up to April 2009.
Furthermore, in 22 boroughs of London, the numbers increased.
Such news could mean more people are keen to secure flats to rent in Fulham or another part of London, as this is likely to be far more affordable than buying a home in the same area and more practical than staying on a waiting list.
Meanwhile, recently published English Housing Survey from Communities and Local Government revealed the number of households renting privately has risen by one million since 2001, from 2.1 million to 3.1 million in 2008-09.
Furthermore, 59 per cent of all private renters expected to eventually buy a home in the UK compared to only 27 per cent of social renters.
Commenting on the news, Jim Vine, head of programme - UK housing policy and practice at the Building and Social Housing Foundation, said: "These figures demonstrate the need for continued investment in housing. Housing should be prioritised as a spending area."
