Croydon set for mini-Gherkins
Croydon has moved a step closer to getting four dramatic new high-rise buildings that have been dubbed mini-Gherkins, in reference to the City of London's iconic office block.
Developer Menta will seek planning approval this summer for the £500 million diamond-faceted skyscrapers, which have been designed by Gherkin architect Ken Shuttleworth.
The final logistical obstacle to erecting the multi-storey buildings was also cleared this month when Royal Mail confirmed it would be relocating its Cherry Orchard Road sorting office in order to give Menta control of the whole site.
At 160 metres in height the largest tower would be the tallest residential building in London. Two of the other towers will also be residential, while the fourth is slated to be a 350,000 sq f office building.
Menta spokesman Craig Marks commented: "I am delighted to be part of Croydon's renaissance as it adapts to the needs and aspirations of its residents for the 21st century. The proposals have been developed to fully support Croydon Council's Vision 2020 and will contribute to a more attractive, cohesive and user friendly centre."
Community website Talk2Croydon.co.uk recently won an international award for empowering local residents in the London borough.
