Crossrail station to be built in Tower Hamlets
Tower Hamlets residents are set to benefit as planning permission for a Crossrail station has been improved.
The Isle of Dogs station is to be built at Canary Wharf, with work due to start early in 2009.
It will be built by Canary Wharf Group (CWG), following an agreement with Transport for London and the transport secretary that will see CWG contribute £150 million of the £500 million cost.
Mayor of London Boris Johnson remarked: "Once Crossrail arrives in Canary Wharf it will act as the catalyst for a further economic boost ... creating lasting jobs over the coming decades."
The station is due to be completed by 2012, opening along with the rest of the project in 2017. It will include 100,000 sq ft of retail space as well as a rooftop car park.
Last week rail minister Andrew Adonis noted that Crossrail will increase the capital's rail capacity by ten per cent, with 24 trains running through Central London in each direction at peak times.
