Crossrail construction begins
Construction on London's first new railway in a generation started on Friday, but what does it mean to residents of property in London?
Mayor of the city Boris Johnson and Prime Minister Gordon Brown met with business leaders to officially launch the Crossrail project, which it is hoped will bring a number of benefits to those who live in the capital.
Areas with Crossrail stations are likely to be more sought after because it has been suggested that the system - which is set for a 2017 opening - will cut journey times across the city.
Those behind the initiative claim that Canary Wharf passengers will be able to get to Liverpool Street in seven minutes, Paddington in 17 minutes and Heathrow in 44 minutes.
London's transport commissioner Peter Hendy said: "Crossrail will deliver a huge capacity boost as part of a multi-billion pound investment to improve and expand the capital's transport network."
It will relieve Tube congestion and extend access to "key retail and business centres" all over London and the south of England.
