Council aims to prevent park charges
Leaders from Wandsworth Council will meet with Royal Parks Agency (RPA) minister Barbara Follett to try and prevent plans being implemented that would see a charge levied against people who take their cars to Richmond Park, it has been announced.
The local authority representatives will meet with the delegate from the RPA, which has said that it needs to generate funds in order to maintain the park's roads.
In addition, the agency states that it is trying to encourage more people living in property to rent in Wandsworth and other residences in the area to leave their vehicles at home when they visit the green space.
However, the council has said that the charges are not fair as options for visiting the park using public transport are somewhat limited.
Edward Lister, leader of the local authority, said: "The charges would be particularly unfair to older visitors, families with small children and others on low incomes."
In recent days, the new Wandsworth Town Library opened after the completion of a £1.5 million redevelopment scheme.
