Canning Town regeneration scheme unveiled
Ambitious new plans to regenerate one of East London's most deprived areas have been outlined by a leading architect.
Speaking at the Mipim property conference in Cannes, Erick van Egeraat revealed details of his £2.7 billion vision to completely redesign the East London suburb.
If approved, Mr van Egeraat's plan would see two new large public areas being set up - Station Square and Retail Square - both of which will maintain direct connections with the Canning Town transport interchange.
It would also entail the creation of a new community comprised of some 10,000 premium and affordable homes - as well as the creation of 3,000 new jobs in line with expansion of the region's commercial sector.
"Our vision is to open up Canning Town, make the most of its landscape potential and create a sustainable environment with a sense of place for its inhabitants," Property Week quoted Mr van Egeraat as saying.
Canning Town has been ranked in the top five per cent of the most deprived areas in the UK, but is expected to be one of the main benefactors of 2012 Olympic Games regeneration efforts.
