Call for cities to gain from eco-town principles
London could gain from the wider application of the principles behind the government's eco-towns scheme, it has been suggested.
Following the announcement of the second phase of the consultation process for the towns by housing minister Margaret Beckett, the Town and Country Planning Association chief executive Gideon Amos argued that these ideas could be applied elsewhere.
He said a study should be carried out into "how and when the lessons of exemplar eco-towns can begin to inform and influence the drive to zero carbon across the existing housing stock in our towns and cities."
Such a move could help make new developments in London more eco-friendly, potentially creating more green flats and houses for those living in the capital to rent.
In a bid to make the capital greener, Mayor Boris Johnson and chair of London Food Rosie Boycott recently launched an initiative to encourage people to turn flat roofs into vegetable patches.
